Awkward Moments Can Also be Horror Moments

For today’s page, I have decided to include a screenshot of SKOOKUM! in
progress! Just for those who’s ever interested how I work on SKOOKUM!,
and have never got to see how I did what I did. It’s Shareware everyone!
I was watching the hit Warner Brothers TV series “One Tree Hill” the
other day, and basically the episode was about the Prom Night of Tree
Hill High. One of the female protagonist, Peyton Sawyer, is lacking of a
date to go with to the prom had decided to put on her mother’s gorgeous
gown; hoping of course that the beauty of the gown matched with her
average beauty would win her a date over at the Proms.
All of her female friends had dates, and they were asked for dances a
couple of times by the other guys in school. Peyton however, sits alone
at the table for the entire evening, without anyone asking her for a
dance. She looked around helplessly, and even her male friends at school
did not ask her for a dance, soon after she gets up and heads to the
restroom in frustration. In the restroom, she meets another friend Karen
(who is Lucas’ mother), who is the manager of a bar. Karen compliments
her on her dress, and Peyton tearfully told her that it was her mother’s
gown. Karen gives her a hug and told her that she would definitely find
a date tonight and that her mother would be so proud to see her in that
dress. In the end not only does Peyton ended up without a date for the
entire evening, and her mother’s dress was ruined when someone spilled
red wine on the dress; ruining it forever.
The tragedy of this character did make me think of two things, how
terrible it can be to be alone and left out of fun and more importantly,
the fragility of relationships. It is the hardest to get into, and once
you’re in it, it is not always easy to get out without getting hurt. I
was moved by the frustration of Peyton, which is matched by the
melancholic song going on at the background that goes, “No, no I want to
be alone no more. So please, so please I want to be lonely no more.”
Some people complain they have to entertain so many of their friends, or
that it is a chore to have so many friends constantly asking you out; I
think it may be more painful to have no friends at all, or in this case,
no date to share a very special moment with. The episode ends with the
following conversation between Lucas the male lead, with Brooke, another
female lead:

BROOKE: Lucas, why do people lie?
LUCAS: Well, people lie because they are not sure of who they are.
BROOKE: (Looks at him)
LUCAS: They lie because they are afraid of other people from finding out
who they really are, before they can find it out for themselves.
BROOKE: (Looks away).
LUCAS: (Pause) Come on, I’ll take you home.
